đ Hi, Podsky!
YouTube quietly moved a finish line this week, and if you've been building towards it, you're further away than you think. A new academic study also put a hard number on something most producers have suspected for years about who actually gets to host.

đ¨ Signal Check â Stat of the Day
Women are still outnumbered about two to one as hosts of podcasts, except in the true crime category, where they predominate, according to a USC Annenberg study reported by Forbes on 19 August.
With that in mind, two new industry awards, the Women Who Podcast Magazine Awards and the International Womenâs Podcast Awards, were launched this year to shine a light on independent female creators. This category is the tier where the gender gap and the correction live for a Podwires audience that is mostly independent shows, not network talent.
đ° One Big Story â YouTube just doubled the bar for new creators to get paid
Podwires Rundown: YouTube confirmed that new applicants to its Partner Programme need 8,000 qualified watch hours in the past year, double the current bar, to unlock ad and Premium revenue share from 1 February 2027. Sources: Forbes, 11 Aug 2026; Barrett Media, 14 Aug 2026.
Key Points:
New applicants need 8,000 watch hours (or 20 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days), up from 4,000. The subscriber floor stays at 1,000.
Existing partners are grandfathered in but need to accept updated terms in YouTube Studio by 31 January 2027.
Barrett Media got YouTube to confirm the details: public long-form videos and podcasts count, private and unlisted videos donât, and ad watch time doesnât count at all. Shorts only count towards the Shorts threshold if theyâre âengagedâ views, a bar YouTube hasnât defined publicly.
YouTube frames the change around its scale, 200 billion Shorts views a day, more than a billion hours of watch time now coming from TV screens, and is pushing smaller channels towards shopping bonuses and brand deal rewards rather than the ad pool.
Alphabet reported close to $9.9 billion in YouTube ad revenue in the first quarter of 2026 alone, the same window in which the platform is telling smaller creators to rely on that revenue less.
Why It Matters: If your growth plan assumed 4,000 hours was the number to hit, youâre not halfway there anymore. Youâre a quarter of the way, on the same deadline youâd already budgeted for. This weekâs move, worth five minutes: pull your YouTube analytics, check the real distance to 8,000, and be honest about whether thatâs still realistic on your current upload pace. If it isnât, the fix isnât uploading faster. Itâs building revenue, memberships, direct sponsorships, and a product that doesnât depend on YouTubeâs ad split at all.
⥠Quick Hits â Why Podcasters Should Care
The Ambies opened submissions for 2027, with an early-bird deadline of 4 September. The Podcast Academyâs awards expand to 35 categories this year, including two new Listenerâs Choice awards, and early pricing ($160 members, $210 non-members) disappears once the window closes. (The Ambies / The Podcast Academy, opened 17 Aug)
Flightpath launched Automation Playbooks for ad delivery control. The tool lets publishers set rules for how and when ads get inserted across a feed, aimed at the kind of manual ad-ops work that eats a small teamâs week. Itâs worth asking your host whether something like this is coming to your own dashboard. (PodcastingToday, 20 Aug)
Covatic launched live campaign optimisation, adjusting ad performance in real time rather than after a campaign ends. Itâs built for publisher-scale ad ops, not a solo show, but itâs a signal of where the ad-tech layer underneath your sponsorships is heading next. (PodcastingToday, 18 Aug)
Realm added six new shows to its network, spanning true crime, comedy and Hollywood history. Another data point on how fast the mid-size network tier is filling out its catalogue this year. (PodcastingToday, 20 Aug)
𧰠Tactic / Tool of the Day
If today's lead story applies to you, don't wait for February to fix your revenue mix. Pick one non-YouTube income line you haven't tried yet, a Patreon tier, a direct sponsorship pitch, or a paid RSS feed for premium episodes, and set it up this week, even in its smallest possible form. The goal isn't to replace YouTube ad revenue overnight. It's to have something running before the new threshold forces the question.

đ§ Listen & Learn â Episode Case Study
You're Dead to Me, the BBC history podcast hosted by Greg Jenner, just returned for a new series after seven years on air and nearly two hundred episodes in its back catalogue.
Asked about the show's longevity, Jenner told Podcast Review: "As a historian who loves comedy, hosting You're Dead To Me for the past seven years has been a fantastic experience... There are loads of history podcasts out there, but YDTM provides a unique balance of expert insights, profound research, and giant laughs.
The lesson for a smaller show isn't the format; it's the discipline behind it: a clear, repeatable premise (comedian plus expert, one historical topic) that's flexible enough to still feel fresh two hundred episodes in. (Source: Podcast Review, 4â9 Aug 2026)
