đ Hi, Podsky!
On 24 August, YouTube quietly redefined what counts as a âviewâ, and depending who you ask, that inflated some counts by anywhere from 7% to nearly 100%. This week, three agencies who normally compete for the same clients stood on the same stage and said, in effect, Weâre not paying you for that. It's the sharpest measurement fight of the year, and it lands the same week. Sounds Profitable's Tom Webster stood up at Podcast Movement and said the quiet part out loud: Netflix is now the third biggest place people find podcasts, and your show can't get on there no matter how good it is.

AD MARKET & MEASUREMENT
Three rival ad agencies agree: YouTube's new view count doesn't get paid
Podwires Rundown: At Sounds Profitableâs Podcast Business Summit in New York, the CEOs of ADOPTER Media, Oxford Road and Right Side Up shared a stage to announce theyâll all buy YouTube inventory on âEngaged Viewsâ in 2027, not the new public view count YouTube introduced on 24 August, because that new number can run double the old one for the exact same audience.
Source: ADOPTER Mediaâs own recap of the panel, published 25 September 2026 by Sherry Del Rizzo, Director of Marketing at ADOPTER Media, an agency that itself buys tens of millions of dollars in YouTube ads a year and stands to benefit from holding the line on pricing. Founder Glenn Rubenstein, quoted throughout, also serves as an advisor to Podscribe, one of the measurement firms building tools to report Engaged Views automatically, a relationship the article discloses directly.
Key Points:
On 24 August, YouTube changed the public âviewâ count to fire from a single frame of playback, a mouse hover, or an autoplay scroll-by, with no minimum watch time, across every format it hosts.
The older, stricter metric still exists. Itâs now called an Engaged View, it requires a viewer to click play or watch past that first frame, and itâs no longer shown publicly. Only creators can see it, in their own dashboard.
ADOPTERâs Rubenstein told the summit the new public count is running âtwo to two and a half timesâ higher than the old one for some accounts, and warned that pricing 2027 buys on it would trigger âmass cancellations in February and Marchâ once brands see the actual results.
Right Side Upâs Krystina Rubino, a GM who came from display advertising, compared the moment to that industryâs own âviewabilityâ reckoning between 2011 and 2015, when buyers stopped trusting raw impression counts.
Podscribe has already rolled out automated Engaged View reporting for creators willing to share YouTube channel access; YMH Studios was the first network to say publicly it would report the metric.
Why It Matters
Three agencies that normally fight over the same clients donât share a stage unless the alternative is worse for everyone. Whatâs actually happening here is a private industry standard filling a gap YouTube itself created and then walked away from. Thatâs the same dynamic behind the AMP Accords, and itâs a pattern worth watching: when a platform loosens its own numbers, the buy side writes its own rulebook rather than wait for one.
The number that should worry you if you sell YouTube sponsorships directly isnât the view count. Itâs the CPM math underneath it. If your 2026 rate was built on the old metric and you quietly let a clientâs insertion order carry the new inflated number into 2027, youâre not getting a raise, youâre setting up the exact cancellation wave Rubenstein described, three months after the invoice goes out.
The Big Picture
For Independent Producers: Before you send a 2027 rate card to anyone buying YouTube placements, specify Engaged Views in writing, the same way youâd specify a download-based metric for RSS. If a buyer wonât commit to that in the insertion order, ask why, because the difference between the two numbers is precisely the gap this panel spent a keynote warning brands about.
For the Industry: Watch whether YouTube responds to three agencies publicly rejecting its own headline metric or lets the buy side keep negotiating around it indefinitely.

DISCOVERY & DISTRIBUTION
Netflix is now podcasting's third biggest discovery surface. You can't put your show there.
Podwires Rundown: Tom Websterâs Podcast Landscape 2026, Sounds Profitableâs annual flagship study, finds Netflix has climbed past Apple Podcasts to become the third most-named place Americans encounter podcasts, behind only YouTube and Spotify, and used his Podcast Movement keynote to argue thatâs a genuine problem, not a milestone, because unlike YouTube or Spotify, there is no way for an independent show to put itself there.
Source: Sounds Profitableâs own article, written by Tom Webster and published 23 September 2026, adapted from his Podcast Movement keynote the previous week. Sounds Profitable is podcastingâs own trade-research body, run on partner funding from roughly 250 companies, and The Podcast Landscape 2026 study itself was sponsored by American Public Media, BetterHelp, NPR, ESPN Podcasts, SiriusXM and DAX, disclosed directly in the piece; Websterâs own conclusion argues against feeding more content to platforms, which cuts against the interests of some of the same networks and platforms that fund his research.
Key Points:
The Podcast Landscape 2026 surveyed 5,473 US adults and asked where theyâve ever encountered a podcast in the last 12 months, regardless of how often. YouTube leads by a wide margin, Spotify is a distant second, and Netflix has overtaken Apple Podcasts for third.
You can publish your own show to YouTube or Spotify and it stays there under your control. Netflix selects a small number of existing hit shows itself; there is no submission process an independent producer can use to get a show onto the platform.
Webster ties this to Netflixâs history of cancelling acquired shows (Mindhunter, The OA) based on internal viewing data rather than public demand, meaning even a show that does get picked up has no guarantee of staying.
The share of listeners who name a dedicated podcast app (Apple Podcasts, Pocket Casts, Overcast) as their main listening app fell from 19% to 15% in a year, which Webster reads as evidence that podcasting is losing the âshowcaseâ surfaces built specifically around it.
On YouTube specifically, 77% of listeners who discover a podcast there say they got there through deliberate search for a show, host or topic, not through recommendation or browsing, meaning the platformâs scale isnât currently translating into serendipitous discovery for anyone not already being searched for.
Why It Matters
Webster is explicit that this isnât a call to boycott Netflix, and the data backs a cautious read: only 21% of consumers have encountered a podcast there at all, and just 5% call it their main platform. Nobodyâs audience is being stolen overnight. Whatâs actually at risk is slower and less visible: genres too expensive or too niche to interest a platform buying a small number of expensive acquisitions, and the mid-tier shows that used to get found through a dedicated appâs charts or editorial picks rather than an algorithm optimised for something else entirely.
Itâs worth naming the tension plainly. Webster is arguing against exactly the kind of exclusive platform deal his own funders and partners occasionally sign, and he says as much rather than hiding it. Thatâs a more useful kind of research voice than one that only ever confirms what its sponsors want to hear.
The Big Picture
For Independent Producers: Donât treat âgetting big enough for a Netflix dealâ as a growth strategy, because thereâs no path to it that doesnât run through already being one of the biggest shows in your category. Put your energy into the places you can actually control: a dedicated app presence, direct RSS distribution, and a specific, searchable show name and description, since 77% of YouTube discovery already runs on people searching for something specific rather than stumbling onto it.
For the Industry: Watch whether Sounds Profitable follows through on its stated plan to raise this with its roughly 250 partners and whether any of them push back publicly given how many are also chasing streaming-platform deals themselves.

PLATFORM DISCOVERY
YouTube built an AI host to tell you which podcast to watch next
Podwires Rundown: At its Made on YouTube event on 23 September, YouTube announced âYour Podcast Lineup,â a personalised AI-audio guide inside YouTube Music that delivers a weekly spoken preview of recommended shows and explains, in its own voice, why a listener might like each one.
Source: YouTubeâs own blog announcement, 23 September 2026, cross-checked against independent coverage from Podcast News Daily. YouTube is the platform whose own discovery surface benefits directly from keeping people inside YouTube Music rather than switching apps, so a feature built to make YouTube stickier for podcast listening is also a feature that serves YouTubeâs own retention numbers.
Key Points:
Your Podcast Lineup is available to YouTube Music and Premium subscribers and runs as a weekly spoken segment, not a one-off recommendation, meaning it will be a recurring discovery touchpoint rather than a single algorithmic nudge.
It launches alongside Ask Music, a conversational AI search tool that works across podcasts and YouTubeâs catalogue of more than 300 million songs, letting listeners ask for shows in plain language rather than browsing categories.
Custom Feeds lets any user build a homepage feed from a written prompt describing a mood or interest, which can include podcast content alongside music and video.
YouTube did not disclose what signals (watch history, engaged views, subscriptions) feed the weekly picks, so producers currently have no visibility into what earns a spot in the guide.
The feature ships as AI-narrated audio, meaning the âwhy youâll like thisâ explanation is generated, not written or approved by the podcast itself.
Why It Matters
An AI host recommending your show to strangers is a new kind of gatekeeper, and itâs one you canât currently see inside. Every prior YouTube discovery surface (search, related videos, autoplay) at least left a visible trail. A spoken weekly guide with undisclosed inputs is the platform saying trust us, and after this monthâs Engaged Views fight, trust is exactly whatâs in short supply on this platform right now.
It also cuts directly against Tom Websterâs point above, that YouTube discovery today is overwhelmingly deliberate search rather than serendipity. An AI host actively recommending shows people didnât search for is YouTubeâs own attempt to build the serendipity Webster says the platform currently lacks, which makes this feature worth revisiting once thereâs real data on whether it changes that 77% figure at all. Itâs also a genuinely different bet than the one Spotify is making the same week, and worth reading as a pair rather than in isolation.
The Big Picture
For Independent Producers: Make sure your showâs title and description actually state what itâs about and who itâs for in plain language, the same way youâd write good SEO copy. An AI system generating spoken recommendations is pattern-matching on your metadata, not listening to your best episode.
For the Industry: Whoever controls the explanation a listener hears before theyâve pressed play controls a real piece of the discovery funnel, and right now thatâs entirely YouTubeâs black box.

PLATFORM DISCOVERY
Spotify just handed listeners the keys to your discoverability
Podwires Rundown: Spotify began rolling out Taste Profile to US Premium subscribers on 23 September, a tool that lets listeners see how Spotifyâs algorithm currently understands their taste across music, podcasts and audiobooks, and edit it directly using plain-language requests.
Source: TechCrunch, reported by Sarah Perez, 23 September 2026. Spotifyâs own framing presents this as a listener-empowerment feature; itâs worth noting that Spotify also benefits from listeners staying engaged with the app long enough to keep tuning their profile, rather than churning to a competitor.
Key Points:
Taste Profile was first shown at SXSW in March and beta-tested in New Zealand before this US Premium rollout.
Listeners can ask for âmoreâ or âlessâ of a genre, artist, show or general vibe in natural language, and the change applies immediately to Discover Weekly, the homepage feed, and eventually Spotify Wrapped.
This is the same recommendation engine that decides which podcasts get surfaced to a given listener, meaning a listener who tells Spotify âless true crimeâ is now actively editing your show out of someoneâs feed, not just failing to engage with it passively.
Spotify has not said whether editing a Taste Profile affects a showâs reported audience metrics or discovery ranking for other listeners, only the individual userâs own feed.
The feature is limited to adults 18 and older and US Premium accounts at launch.
Why It Matters
Podcast discovery has always run on inference: what you played, how long you stayed, what you skipped. Taste Profile replaces some of that inference with a direct statement of preference, and thatâs a genuinely different signal for a recommendation engine to weigh. A listener who explicitly asks for âmore indie business podcasts, less finance brosâ is handing Spotify a cleaner data point than six months of half-finished episodes ever could.
Compare that to YouTubeâs approach the same week: an AI host deciding what youâll like for you, versus a dial that lets you decide and tell the algorithm directly. Neither is obviously better for a producer. One rewards being legible to a machineâs guess. The other rewards being exactly what you say you are, with no room for a curious listener who wandered in from somewhere else.
The Big Picture
For Independent Producers: Check how your show is actually categorised and tagged on Spotify for Creators. If a listener types âI want smart, funny history podcastsâ and your show is filed under something vague or wrong, Taste Profile will actively route around you rather than just fail to find you.
For the Industry: If this rolls out beyond the US and proves genre-tagging accuracy actually moves discovery outcomes, expect every hosting platform to push harder on metadata quality this year.

⥠RAPID FIRE
Amazon Music expands video podcasts to five new countries and adds dynamic ad tools. Video podcasts on Amazon Music now reach Canada, the UK, Mexico, Brazil and Japan, alongside new hosting partnerships with Flightcast, Triton Digitalâs Omny and others, and creators can now insert dynamic video ads while keeping existing sponsorships intact. (Press release forwarded by Catamaran Communications, 16 September, corroborated at PodcastingTodayâs independent write-up)
Spotifyâs podcast Partner Program lands in 35 countries, its biggest expansion yet. Podcasters in Italy, Spain, Brazil, Mexico, Colombia and 30 other new markets can now earn ad and Premium revenue share; Spotify says payouts to existing shows are already up a third since Januaryâs eligibility change. (TechCrunch, 17 September)
IAB Tech Lab wants AI agents handling the RFP-to-buy process for ads. AAMP 3.0âs new OpenProposal standard lets AI buying agents request, compare and evaluate ad proposals from publishers automatically; itâs built for large publishers and ad-tech platforms first, but a public, structured media kit is the same thing a future agentic buyer would need to find an indie show at all. (IAB Tech Lab release, forwarded by Einsteinz Communications, 22-23 September)
Joe Wicks and Bupa launch a five-part video podcast testing health trends against science. Health or Hype puts Wicks through real experiments (24 hours alone in a rainforest, nearly halving his sleep) alongside health experts, in a branded-content format that treats the host as the test subject rather than the narrator. (PodcastingToday, 22 September)
A teacher-support podcast swaps scripted episodes for real group-therapy recordings. Teaching through Emotions starts its fourth season on 1 October by recording actual Teacher Support Groups in session, letting listeners hear real educators work through burnout in real time rather than a retelling of it. (Teaching through Emotions, publisherâs own Substack, 22 September)
