š Hi, Podsky!
New listeners are still finding podcasts. Fewer of them are sticking around long enough to matter.
That's the uncomfortable thread running through this week's research, and it lands right as election-season political shows are proving the opposite is possible when a show earns a genuine slot in someone's routine.
We're also digging into what Edison's flagship annual study says about video finally catching audio and what it means that a Murdoch is now running one of podcasting's most recognisable networks.

Big week. Letās get into it.
šļø Today, we have exclusive insights on:
Audiences are back to 2024 levels, but āfrequentā listening keeps sliding. Podcasting now has the weakest habit conversion of any major media category measured
Political and news shows are having their best quarter in years as the midterms approach, and creators who built followings on YouTube are converting those into chart positions.
Edisonās Podcast Consumer 2026 confirms video and audio are now neck and neck; YouTube has pulled ahead of Spotify as the preferred platform, and listeners are wary of AI touching anything audience-facing
James Murdoch has closed his purchase of the Vox Media Podcast Network and New York Magazine, and the shows involved are bigger than you might think.
Plus five quick hits: another exclusive streaming-video podcast deal, Spotify's move onto Twitch, a new HLS video hosting partner on Apple Podcasts, an ad-tech tool that repurposes your audio ad for CTV, and fresh data on how Gen Z actually listens.

AUDIENCE & LOYALTY
Podcasting's Reach Is Back. Its Habit Problem Isn't Going Away.
Podwires Rundown: Weekly podcast reach has climbed back to 57% of U.S. adults, matching 2024 levels, but the share of listeners tuning in three to five days a week has fallen for three straight years, and podcasting now converts casual sampling into habit worse than any other media category measured.
Source: Inside Radioās Podcast News Daily, reporting on Crowd React Mediaās State of Media 2026 report (survey of 1,094 U.S. adults, fielded MarchāApril 2026). Crowd React is a media research and analytics firm that sells audience insight products to broadcasters and publishers, so a report arguing that audiences need more sophisticated habit-tracking is also a pitch for its own services. The underlying numbers are still worth taking seriously.
Key Points
Weekly reach rebounded from 50% in 2025 to 57% in 2026, one of only four media categories to regain lost audience this year.
Frequent listening (3ā5 days a week) dropped from 37% in 2024 to 32% in 2025 to 28% in 2026, even as total reach grew.
62% of listeners now discover shows through social media, and only 16% through word of mouth, which the report says works against organic sharing.
51% of listeners take some negative action when an ad isnāt read by the host, including 27% who stop listening entirely.
74% of listening happens while doing something else, reinforcing podcastingās role as a companion medium rather than a destination.
Why It Matters
This is the AMP-thread conversation in a different outfit. For a couple of years the industry measured itself almost entirely on reach: downloads, unique listeners, chart position. Crowd Reactās data suggests reach was never the scarce resource. Attention that repeats is.
The discovery numbers back this up in an uncomfortable way. Social platforms are doing more of the work of finding new listeners than word of mouth ever did, but social discovery produces sampling, not loyalty. A clip earns a listen. It doesnāt earn a Tuesday.
The host-read finding deserves its own headline. A quarter of listeners will simply turn off an episode when the ad isnāt in the hostās voice. Thatās not a minor production preference, itās a measurable churn trigger, and it should reframe how producers think about programmatic fill on shows that built their audience on intimacy.
The Big Picture
For Independent Producers: Audit your last ten episodes for one thing: does each one give a reason to come back next week, or does it stand alone? Serialised threads, recurring segments, and a consistent release rhythm are the cheapest levers you have to counter habit softening. If youāre running programmatic ads on a host-driven show, watch your completion rate around the ad break specifically, not just overall downloads.
For the Industry: Expect more networks to start reporting āconversion rateā alongside downloads in sales decks over the next two quarters. Advertisers buying reach without asking about repeat listenership are increasingly buying an illusion.
This Weekās Skill Gap: Shows chasing habits rather than reach are starting to hire producers specifically for retention, not just growth, who can build a season arc, not just a launch plan. Thatās a distinct skill from discovery marketing, and itās becoming its own line item on podwires.com.

THE MIDTERM BUMP
Political Podcasts Are Having Their Best Quarter in Years, and the charts prove it.
Podwires Rundown: Triton Digitalās Q2 2026 U.S. Podcast Ranker shows news podcasts posting the biggest quarter-over-quarter growth of any genre (+8.4%) as the midterms approach, while shows that built their following on YouTube first are increasingly the ones climbing the audio charts too.
Source: Talkers magazine and Radio Ink, both reporting Triton Digitalās own Q2 2026 Podcast Ranker, released 20ā21 August 2026. Triton sells podcast measurement and ranking data as a commercial product, so a ranker showing dramatic quarterly movement also markets Tritonās own tracking business. The show-level chart data is independently verifiable through Tritonās public rankers.
Key Points
Comedy still leads all genres at a 44.5% share, but News jumped from 23.7% to 25.7% quarter over quarter, the sharpest gain of any category.
The Shawn Ryan Show climbed 32 spots to #22, and The Tucker Carlson Show moved up 10 spots to #9, both YouTube-native shows converting cross-platform reach into audio rankings.
Meet the Press debuted on the ranker this quarter, and NBC Nightly News with Tom Llamas posted strong gains, showing legacy news brands are finding real podcast distribution.
Triton expects the political and news bump to continue into Q3 as campaign ad spend increases across every medium ahead of the midterms.
Why It Matters
Two stories are tangled together here and itās worth pulling them apart. One is seasonal: politics always spikes podcast attention before an election, and it will fade afterward the way it always has. The other is structural: shows that establish an audience on YouTube first are now routinely outperforming audio-only launches on audio charts, not just on video platforms. Thatās not a midterms story. Thatās the shape of discovery now, and it isnāt going back.
Worth flagging plainly: chart position on a Triton ranker is not the same thing as revenue, and a show riding a political news cycle can lose most of its audience the week after an election. Producers building politics or news content for the long haul should plan for the November drop-off now, not be surprised by it.
The Big Picture
For Independent Producers: If youāre in news, politics, or current affairs, this is your highest-attention window of the cycle. Use it to convert casual listeners into subscribers to something durable, an email list, a Patreon tier, or a companion newsletter, not just more downloads that vanish in December.
For the Industry: Ad buyers are already reallocating towards news and politics for Q3 and Q4. Expect CPMs on political-adjacent shows to firm up through the election and then soften hard afterwards.

THE PODCAST CONSUMER 2026
Video Just Caught Up to Audio, YouTube Just Passed Spotify, and Listeners Don't Trust AI Near the Mic
Podwires Rundown: Edison Researchās annual flagship study finds that weekly podcast consumers are now just as likely to watch as to listen; YouTube has overtaken Spotify as the platform most weekly consumers use; and while listeners are fine with AI doing research and brainstorming behind the scenes, a majority see it as a threat to credibility and creativity when it touches the finished product.
Source: Edison Research at SSRS, The Podcast Consumer 2026, published June 2026, drawing on Edisonās Infinite Dial, Share of Ear, and Podcast Metrics data sets. Edison is an independent research firm and one of the industryās most cited sources; it does sell research and measurement services commercially, but this particular report isnāt built around a single sponsorās product the way some industry studies are.
Key Points
Video podcast consumption overtook audio-only for the first time in Q3 2025 (82% watching vs. 78% listening among weekly consumers), up from a 73%-to-89% gap in 2023.
Daily podcast consumers spend 5 hours 11 minutes with all audio daily, more than an hour above the general population average, and 36% of that time goes to podcasts specifically.
76% of weekly consumers say theyāve acted on a podcast ad, and a real-world media mix test found that shifting budget to podcasts lifted reach among adults 18-54 by 41% without any extra spend.
69% approve of AI handling research or brainstorming, but 62% see AI as a threat to podcast credibility and 59% see it as a threat to creativity.
Why It Matters
The video-audio crossover has been coming for two years and itās now simply true rather than trending. Whatās more interesting is the AI split. Listeners arenāt rejecting AI wholesale, theyāre drawing a line at the microphone. Research and prep, fine. Anything that touches the voice or the finished cut, not fine. Thatās a more specific verdict than most ālisteners hate AIā takes suggest, and itās actually good news for producers using AI as a research or editing assistant rather than a replacement host.
The 41% reach lift from Nielsenās media mix modelling is the number advertisers will actually act on. Everything else in this report is context. That one line is the pitch.
The Big Picture
For Independent Producers: If your show still treats video as optional, this is the data that closes that argument. It doesnāt need cinematic production; a static camera and clean audio clear the bar Edison is measuring. On AI, be transparent about what itās doing in your workflow (research, transcription, rough cuts) and keep it away from anything listeners would recognise as the hostās voice or judgement.
For the Industry: Expect ad buys to require video-capable inventory increasingly as a baseline, not a premium add-on.
This Weekās Skill Gap: Producers who can shoot and edit clean, simple two-camera video without turning a show into a full production shoot are in real demand right now, and thatās a fast-growing category on podwires.com.

THE VOX DEAL
James Murdoch Now Owns One of Podcasting's Biggest Networks
Podwires Rundown: James Murdochās Lupa Systems has closed its reported $300 million-plus purchase of the Vox Media Podcast Network and New York Magazine, giving him control of shows including Pivot with Kara Swisher and Scott Galloway, Criminal, and Where Should We Begin? with Esther Perel, while The Verge, Eater, SB Nation, and the rest of Vox Mediaās non-magazine brands split off separately.
Source: Variety, reporting the dealās May 2026 announcement and July 2026 close.
Key Points
New York Magazine, Vox.com (including Today, Explained), and the Vox Media Podcast Network will operate under Lupa Systems as a renamed āVox Media,ā still led by CEO Jim Bankoff.
The Verge, Eater, Popsugar, SB Nation, and The Dodo are not part of the deal and will split into a separate company under new leadership.
The deal values the acquired assets at more than $300 million, a notable price tag for a media business built substantially on podcast and newsletter revenue rather than traditional advertising.
Why It Matters
Podcast networks keep changing hands at prices that would have seemed implausible five years ago, and itās worth noting whoās buying: not ad agencies or traditional broadcasters, but media operators betting that a loyal, subscription-adjacent audience is worth more than the same audience reached through display ads. Thatās a vote of confidence in the exact model most independent producers are already trying to build, just at a much bigger scale.
Itās also a reminder that āindependentā podcast networks are consolidating fast. Vox Mediaās podcast arm was already one of the more prestige-adjacent operations in the space. Now it answers to a Murdoch-controlled holding company, which will change what gets greenlit there even if the current shows donāt move.
The Big Picture
For Independent Producers: If you have a show distributed or produced through the Vox Media Podcast Network, expect a strategy review under new ownership within the next two to three quarters, which is standard after acquisitions like this. Get any verbal agreements about renewal terms or ad splits in writing now.
For the Industry: Watch what Lupa Systems does with New York Magazineās subscription model applied to the podcast slate. If it works, expect more buyers to chase the same playbook.
