đ Hi, Podsky!
Triton Digital's new quarterly ranker has a headline everyone will use: political podcasts are surging ahead of the midterms. It also has a second finding nobody will lead with, buried in the composition data further down the same release.
A technology podcast with 2.3% reach indexes at 200 for luxury shoppers. A show with a fraction of the audience of a chart-topper can be worth more per listener to the right advertiser. Reach and value aren't the same number, and this week's data makes the gap unusually clear.

Big week. Letâs get into it.
đď¸ Today, we have exclusive insights on:
Tritonâs Q2 ranker shows political and news podcasts climbing fastest ahead of the midterms, and niche genres like tech and kidsâ content delivering advertiser value totally out of proportion to their reach
New data from Sounds Profitableâs Podcast Atlas: 89% of listeners now watch podcast clips on social media, and the report argues clips, not full episodes, have become the actual front door to new audiences
A beauty brand skipped the ad buy entirely and bought its way into the writersâ room of a new fragrance podcast instead
Audacy just signed the exclusive audio rights to one of the fastest-growing independent news operations in the country, backed by a Soros-led investment round
Plus five quick hits: another exclusive streaming deal for iHeart's podcasts, a Star Trek duo's show joining PodcastOne's network, PodcastOne's own quarterly numbers, a major cross-industry research project with NPR and PRX behind it, and what listeners actually think about AI in their podcasts.
Todayâs reading time is 5 minutes. - Miko Santos (August 30, 2026)
AUDIENCE DATA
Political podcasts are surging ahead of the midterms, and the real story is what a tiny tech-podcast audience is worth to advertisers
Podwires Rundown: Tritonâs Q2 ranker leads with political podcasts climbing the charts before the midterms, but the composition data further down the same release is the part worth building a sponsor pitch around: a handful of niche genres are proving hugely valuable to advertisers at a fraction of the audience size.
Source: Triton Digitalâs Q2 2026 U.S. Podcast Ranker (Aug. 20, 2026), Tritonâs own release on data drawn from Demos+, developed with Signal Hill Insights. Triton sells podcast measurement and ad tech, so a report showing podcasting as increasingly measurable and valuable also serves its own business. The underlying survey and download figures are real; the framing is a vendorâs.
Key Points:
News posted the quarterâs sharpest reach gain, up 8.4% to 25.7%, as political and opinion shows pulled in new listeners ahead of the midterms. Comedy still leads overall at 44.5% reach, Society & Culture third at 21.2%.
Political programs across the spectrum returned to the chart this quarter: Mark Levin, Breaking Points with Krystal and Saagar, The David Pakman Show, Pivot and Piers Morgan Uncensored. The Tucker Carlson Show jumped to #9 overall from #19, one of the quarterâs biggest single moves.
Legacy news brands are finding real podcast distribution too. NBCâs Meet the Press debuted on the chart, and NBC Nightly News with Tom Llamas and Serial both posted strong gains.
Composition indexing tells a different story than reach. Technology podcasts (2.3% reach) index at 200 for luxury shoppers and 187 for business travel intent. Kids & Family (2.1% reach) indexes at 223 among mothers. Fiction (2.2% reach) is podcastingâs strongest connection to Gen Z listeners, indexing at 212.
Shows simulcasting audio and video arenât new to this ranker, but the political surge is happening on top of a chart where creator-led shows, Bobbi Althoffâs, Dan and Philâs, are converting existing social followings straight into top-50 placement.
Why It Matters
Everyone chasing the midterm political wave already knows what theyâre chasing. Fewer producers will notice the second story sitting in the same release: reach and advertiser value have stopped tracking each other closely, if they ever really did. A kidsâ podcast with 2.1% of the market indexing at 223 among mothers isnât a rounding error next to Comedyâs 44.5%, itâs a different kind of asset entirely, and a smarter one to pitch to the right sponsor.
That matters more for a small show than a big one. A niche audience without much scale canât win a bidding war against Comedy or News for a broad-reach campaign. It can win a targeted one, and the composition numbers here are the actual argument for why, in language an advertiserâs media-buying team will recognise on sight.
The Big Picture
For Independent Producers: If your show sits in a niche genre, technology, business, kids and family, fiction, take the specific index numbers from this ranker into your next sponsor conversation instead of your download count. âMy audience indexes at 200 for luxury purchase intentâ is a sentence a media buyer can act on. âI get 4,000 downloads an episodeâ often isnât.
For the Industry: Expect ad dollars to keep chasing political and news podcasts through Q3 as midterm spending ramps up, and expect legacy broadcasters to keep leaning on podcast distribution to extend brands that used to live only on linear.
This Weekâs Skill Gap: Turning a report like this into an actual media kit, the kind with your own composition data laid out for a buyer, isnât something most producers have measured for themselves. Worth a look at the podwires.com marketplace if you donât have that number yet.

DISCOVERY RESEARCH
New data says the clip, not the episode, is now podcasting's actual front door
Podwires Rundown: Nearly nine in ten podcast listeners watch clips on social media at least occasionally, and Sounds Profitableâs latest data argues the clip has become the entry point to a show, not a marketing afterthought bolted on once the real episode is done.
Source: Inside Audio Marketing (July 24, 2026), reporting on findings from Sounds Profitableâs Podcast Atlas, written by Sounds Profitableâs Tom Webster. Sounds Profitable is funded by a large roster of podcast ad-tech and hosting sponsors, so research arguing podcastingâs discovery layer is measurable and valuable also supports its fundersâ businesses. The listener-survey figures themselves are the actual data; the framing around them is an industry research shopâs.
Key Points:
89% of podcast listeners watch podcast clips on at least one social platform at least sometimes, and 72% say they do so often or always.
The conversion figures are softer than the headline number suggests. 81% say clips at least sometimes lead them to watch a full episode, but only 30% say that happens often or always. The report itself warns against reading the bigger figure as a conversion rate.
74% of clip viewers give clips their full or near-full attention, close behind the 77% who say the same of full audio episodes and 81% for full video.
Listeners most often watch clips while scrolling social media (48%) or during idle waiting time (47%), moments a 40-minute episode was never going to fill.
71% of listeners say theyâd follow a host they enjoy from a full podcast into short-form clips, meaning the discovery relationship runs both directions once a listener already knows the show.
Why It Matters
The 89% figure is the one thatâll get quoted everywhere, and itâs the least useful number in the report. The more honest read is the 30%: clips often get watched, and only sometimes turn into anything more. Tom Websterâs own framing is right that clips put a show into the same feeds where reach-money already flows, but a producer treating every clip like a guaranteed funnel step is going to be disappointed by the actual numbers.
What the data does support is a genuine strategic shift, not a vanity metric. Idle-time and scrolling moments are inventory a full episode was never competing for anyway. A clip that lands there isnât cannibalising episode listens, itâs reaching someone who wasnât going to press play on the long version regardless.
The Big Picture
For Independent Producers: Donât measure clip success by whether it converts someone into a listener this week. Measure whether itâs designed to point somewhere, an on-screen title naming the full episode, a host explicitly mentioning where the clip comes from. Those are the two things 43% of viewers say actually tell them a longer episode exists, and plenty of clips still skip both.
For the Industry: If clips are genuinely the discovery layer now, expect ad buyers to start pricing clip placement on its own terms rather than treating it as bonus inventory tacked onto a full-episode buy.

SPONSORSHIP DEALS
A beauty brand skipped the ad buy and bought its way into the writers' room instead
Podwires Rundown: Refinery29 and eos didnât sell a mid-roll slot. Eos came on as a co-producer of âNose Dive,â with input on subject matter, before the show had aired a single episode, and that distinction is the whole template for producers pitching sponsors on something bigger than a standard read.
Source: Glossy (Aug. 17, 2026), quoting Refinery29 chief content officer Brooke DeVard and eos president Soyoung Kang directly. Both quotes come from a brand and a publisher making the case for their own deal, which is worth remembering before repeating either companyâs framing as neutral fact.
Key Points:
âNose Diveâ is a five-episode podcast hosted by perfumer and creative director Asia Grant, who runs her own fragrance line, Redoux, separate from eos. It launched August 17 with a Y2K-themed episode featuring JoJo Levesque.
Eos signed on as co-producer with input on subject matter, not a script to read from, according to DeVard. It agreed to the deal before it had even launched its first fragranced body mists in December 2025.
Kang told Glossy the brand wanted âto be part of the narrative of the forces driving fragrance as an industry,â rather than adjacent to a show it had bought ads on.
Refinery29 gave Glossy a figure that 52% of its audience say fragrance is part of how they express their identity, the reach argument underneath why eos said yes to a show it hadnât seen an episode of.
Why It Matters
An ad read puts a brandâs name next to a conversation. A co-production credit puts it inside the premise of what the conversation is allowed to be about. Thatâs a real difference, and itâs worth being precise about, because DeVardâs framing that the interviews go âso beyondâ the sponsor relationship is exactly what every sponsor-funded show says about itself. Grant hosting as a working perfumer rather than an eos employee is a genuine credibility signal. Eos still chose which stories get made by writing the cheque, and Kang has already said the plan is to use the show to build on future product launches.
None of that makes âNose Diveâ a bad show. It means the deal is worth studying for its structure, not its virtue.
The Big Picture
For Independent Producers: Study the pitch shape here, not the celebrity guest list. Refinery29 didnât bring eos a rate card. It brought a specific creative premise and offered real involvement in exchange for real money and a longer runway than one ad cycle. If youâre pitching anything beyond a standard read, name the angle and name the boundary, not just your audience size.
For the Industry: This deal isnât available to most shows on format alone. It landed because Refinery29 already had the audience and the production infrastructure to stage a live taping at its own BeautyCon event, leverage a solo producer doesnât have yet, whatever the format lesson underneath it.

NETWORK CONSOLIDATION
Audacy just signed the exclusive audio rights to a Soros-backed independent news network
Podwires Rundown: MeidasTouch went from a 2020 anti-Trump PAC to a media network with more than a dozen shows, and Audacy just became its exclusive audio sales and distribution partner, starting September 1, on the back of a funding round led by Soros Fund Management, Audacyâs own largest shareholder.
Source: Radio Ink (Aug. 19, 2026), citing statements from Audacyâs head of podcasts and MeidasTouchâs co-founder, both making the case for their own deal. Radio Ink also reports the financial connection worth naming directly: Soros Fund Management became Audacyâs largest shareholder after its 2025 bankruptcy exit, and led MeidasTouchâs first outside investment round in April.
Key Points:
MeidasTouch started in March 2020 as a political action committee formed by brothers Ben, Brett and Jordan Meiselas to oppose Donald Trumpâs reelection. Itâs since grown into a network built around the flagship MeidasTouch Podcast plus more than a dozen additional shows.
Former CBS News correspondent Scott MacFarlane left CBS in March to become MeidasTouchâs chief Washington correspondent, ahead of the April funding round.
Audacy becomes MeidasTouchâs exclusive audio sales and distribution partner from September 1, with an eye toward eventual expansion onto traditional radio.
The same investor, Soros Fund Management, sits on both sides of this deal: itâs Audacyâs largest shareholder and led MeidasTouchâs own funding round four months before the partnership was announced.
Why It Matters
A legacy audio company signing an exclusive deal with an independent political network isnât new by itself. Whatâs worth naming plainly is whoâs funding both sides of the table. That doesnât make the deal bad, and thereâs no suggestion here of anything improper, but a shared investor behind both the buyer and the seller is exactly the kind of detail a reader deserves to see stated rather than left in the fine print of two separate press releases.
For producers outside the political-news space, the more durable pattern is what this deal represents: legacy audio companies are actively hunting for independent networks with existing scale and audience trust, rather than trying to build competing shows from zero.
The Big Picture
For Independent Producers: This kind of exclusive distribution deal only reaches networks with real scale, more than a dozen shows and a recognisable flagship. Itâs not a near-term opportunity for a solo show, but itâs a signal of where legacy audio companies are putting acquisition money, and worth watching if youâre building toward a network of your own.
For the Industry: Expect more of this shape of deal as legacy broadcasters look for audience and credibility they canât build fast enough internally, and expect more scrutiny of whoâs funding the networks on both sides of these partnerships.

⥠RAPID FIRE
Disney+ and Hulu add six iHeartPodcasts titles as video shows. The deal debuted August 14 with âHey Jonas!â and layers on top of iHeartâs existing Netflix video deal from last December. Another data point in the streaming platformsâ race to lock up exclusive podcast video from publishers who already have the scale to make it worthwhile. (Hollywood Reporter)
PodcastOne signs the Star Trek duoâs âDropping Namesâ podcast. Brent Spiner and Jonathan Frakesâs celebrity-conversation show, guests have included Nathan Fillion and LeVar Burton, is PodcastOneâs 12th signing this year, with its first 15 episodes nearing 3 million downloads. (PodcastOne, via GlobeNewswire)
PodcastOne posted record quarterly revenue of $16.1 million, adjusted EBITDA up 172% year over year. A public podcast network posting that kind of EBITDA growth is a useful signal that ad demand for established shows hasnât slowed, whateverâs happening at the smaller end of the market. (PodcastOne, via GlobeNewswire)
NPR, PRX and Crooked Media are co-sponsoring a major new cross-industry podcast study. The Podcast Study 2026 will dig into discovery, loyalty and monetisation, first findings due at the Sounds Profitable Business Summit September 14 to 15. Worth watching for whatever it says about what actually moves a listener from trying a show to becoming a superfan. (Sounds Profitable / Point-To-Point Marketing)
Podcast listeners are surprisingly comfortable with AI behind the scenes, less so with AI on the mic. Edison Researchâs Podcast Consumer 2026 found 69% approve of AI for research and brainstorming, but 62% see AI as a threat to podcast credibility and 59% see it as a threat to creativity. Older data (June), still the clearest read available on where listener tolerance for AI actually sits. (Edison Research at SSRS)
THATâS WRAP
If your show sits in a niche genre this week, pull the specific composition numbers from Triton's ranker before your next sponsor call. A luxury-shopper index of 200 says more than a download count ever will.
